A MESSAGE FROM THE USATHEAD REFEREE

The Whirlpool Steelhead 70.3 Triathlon is sanctioned by USAT, and the following USAT rules apply:

1. USAT and Race Penalties:

  • There will be a team of USAT Officials and Race Marshals on the bike course to enforce the USAT rules, and you may be penalized or disqualified if you break any of those rules.

2. Position:

  • Ride on the right side of the far right lane.
  • Keep at least three bike lengths between you and the cyclist in front of you unless attempting to pass.
  • Pass on the left of the cyclist in front, never on the right.
  • Complete your pass within 15 seconds.
  • If passed, you must drop back 3 lengths, before attempting to re-pass.

3. Violations Commonly Cited by Marshals:

  • Blocking: Riding on the left side of the lane without passing.
  • Illegal Pass: Passing on the right, or failing to drop back three bike lengths before re-passing.
  • Drafting: Following a leading cyclist closer than three bike lengths and failing to pass or exit the draft zone within 15 seconds.
  • Position Violations carry a time penalty for each occurrence, if you are cited for three violations, you will be disqualified.

4. Bike Helmet Violations:

  • Always have the chinstrap of your helmet secured when you are on your bike (including transitions). The chinstrap rule is easy to obey, but forget and you will be disqualified.
  • No radios, CD players, MP3 players, cell phones, etc. If you are caught using one of these devices, you will be disqualified.

5. Course Etiquette:

  • Remember to treat all participants, volunteers & officials with courtesy & consideration. Failure to do so is called Un-sportsmanlike Conduct and you will be disqualified.

6. Transition Area Rules:

  • If you are picking up your race packet at Running Away in Chicago, you may rack your bike on Friday, August 1 from 2pm to 9pm, or on Saturday from 5am to 6:30am. If you are picking up your race packet at the Expo on Friday, August 1, you must rack your bike on Friday. The transition area will be open from 2pm until 9pm.
  • Transition will not re-open for equipment pick-up until the last runner is out on the run course on race day (approximately 1pm). All equipment must be picked up by 5pm!
  • No extra bike wheels, no extra wetsuits, no large duffel bags will be allowed in the transition area. Do not bring extra equipment! Don't leave anything in the transition area that you will need before transition re-opens.
